Reffing my first game tonight (Basketball). Anyone into reffing in here?

I've been doing the official scoring for NCAA basketball games at the scorers table the last 10 years (division II and III),
and sometimes running the scoreboard.

This year I decided to join the reffing crew on the court. Though, it obviously won't be at the college level - I gotta work
my way up the ranks.

Tonight is my first time on the court. It's probably not going to be pretty, as I'm not sure I have all the signals down enough
so they are rote memory, and you have to be quick. They say it will take a few weeks.

I used to be the guy that liked to razz the reffing crew from the sidelines, and now it's payback time. Lol.

I've officiated some middle school games before. So obviously a very low level of competition.

It's definitely tougher than it looks. It's so easy to see everything in the stands, but not as easy with the action right in front of you. Lot's of stuff going on and your brain needs to multi-task fast. For instance, you are counting off three seconds in your mind and about to blow the whistle for a 3 second violation. Then all the sudden an errant pass goes out of bounds off a deflection. You have no clue who touched it last because you missed it as you were concentrating on something else. But you gotta blow that whistle, make a call, and act like you know. Much tougher job than it looks.

I'm actually not sure, as I'm not so much doing this for the money... and tonight's game is pre-season/training so isn't paid (at least I don't think so).

Wednesday we are going over pay tables. I *think* it's roughly $50 a game, so if you do 2 games in an evening, it's a quick $100, not too bad.

Best of luck to ya. I tip my cap refs. Its a thankless job and all the obnoxious parents yelling. I worked the BBQ grill at my kids HS during fball season. I'd give the refs whatever they wanted on the house.

Yeah, I used to be one of those obnoxious guys... at least in my younger days. It is a challenging job, as many times no matter how well you officiate the game, someone is
going to be pissed off at you.

Good luck FZ, I'm sure you'll love it! I'd imagine the games will go by pretty quick and that it's great exercise. Kind of wished I'd started reffing/umpiring as a teenager/college student. I'd think most high level D1 college refs are pulling in well over $100k a year if they're working as much as possible during those 6 months.

I did four years of umpiring little league, Pony league, some high school and some Mens Amateur in Dallas before coming here

Main requirement is to decide right up front that every criticism other than from your colleagues is motivated by huge self-interest and therefore *Anything* you hear needs to be shrugged off.....and best when done with a no-words smile

Also helps if there is any kind of short (60-90 seconds?) pregame w both head coaches to patiently reset core ground rules on behavior. In baseball the main point we hammered was "I will respectfully listen to most any complaint you have but if you start any arguments about balls&strikes you are gone"

I get it. We all were back in the day. Today though, parents are just plain fucking stupid. Some of them even threatening to beat up the ref. OVER A CALL FROM THEIR KIDS GAME!

Yep if i had kids, I wouldn’t put them through the bull shit I see some of these fat out of shape slob parents put them through. Mike Trout is one in a billon, move on clowns.
